2025 Halloween Movie Marathons

I'm taking over the I guess the facilitation seat for today, but this is a fun episode. This is 1 the kind of thing I look forward to every year where we get to create some Halloween movie marathons. And we've got a crew with us tonight and a very attractive crew because I'm looking at you all and I'm yeah, nice, nice folks here. So let's let's see who we've got. We have with us joining us fresh from an amazing episode of screen drafts.

I am still super jet lagged. Like not only was it a long weekend, but the storms in New England delayed our flight back. I did not walk in the door until 4:00 in the morning a couple days ago and tried to get back on schedule last night by going to bed early, only to be thwarted by a 3 LB Chihuahua that decided it needed to like bark every 15 minutes and then hop on my face and just run circles around me. So I am a little bit delirious at this point, but that's OK. That is an adorable Chihuahua though. I have to.

Anyway, we're going to do something super fun tonight while the Mariners are playing, I might add. And so I'm, I don't know how often I'm going to be checking the score, but we'll see. So you get half an eye on the screen, OK. Right, Yeah, yeah, but we'll see. Actually, I usually can't bring myself to watch the games while they're happening, so we're good. This is a nice distraction. And so we're going to have a little. We have 5 marathons for you on a different subject each. And we're going to kind of round Robin this, we're going to set up our, we're going to set the table for you. What will our viewers expect coming into our location? And we're doing 4 movies each and it's going to be on a timetable.

4:59 So 6:00 PM, eight PM, 10:00 PM and 12 midnight. What are we showing and what are our subjects? So first of all, let's introduce what is, what's the theme that you got on the wheel? I'm going to go in the same order that I introduced. Y'all Devon, what's your what? Oh, I was kind of hoping I wasn't going to be first for this because of course, me being me, I have to do something. A smidge A twist if you will, but because mine was very vague, I got around the globe, so ones from different continents is what we settled on. But that's still very broad, so I. Want to vague?

5:45 What do you mean? Because, you know, we're still crafting a movie marathon that still needs to have like a consistent theme, like a ride to it, you know. And I was like, well, this is still very wide open. So I'm still doing my from different continents, But then I took one of the discarded themes as well. So I'm kind of doing a double theme of. Breaking the rules? Yes. You're just expanding them to challenge himself further. I mean, because I was like, I could just pick, you know, the top 4 movies from the various continents, but then like, where's the, where's the, where's the tone? You know? So I, so I opted for a, for a double theme. I'll let the second theme unfold as as we go throughout the evening, but my main one was around the globe. All right.

7:19 I'm so sick of Halloween horror marathon. So horror movies set on holidays that are not Halloween was was my theme. And it's Arbor Day. It's more or less what you would expect from me. So yeah. I expect an Arbor Day pick even though I didn't. Well, I, I, I don't think M Night Shyamalan's the happening occurred on Labor Day, so I couldn't really include that. OK, how about revenge? Revenge. The ruins? The ruins or something, I don't know. Ruins Arielle, How about you? What's your theme? I also made my own fun, so the theme I was assigned was movies set on Halloween that are not in the Halloween franchise.

8:05 And like Devon, I was like, well, that's really, really broad and I want there to be some cohesion. So I assigned myself the meta theme of haunts gone wrong. So all my movies will be about haunts gone wrong. I also have to call shenanigans on one of your picks though. I would never learn. This information. How are you already calling shenanigans? Because I'm looking at the spreadsheet, I'm looking at the sheet. I don't know. OK, I. Guess I'm not looking at the sheets. I'm not either. I want to be surprised. Looking at Mike. Sheet unfolds before me. OK, Mike.

So I had horror anthologies, which I think Arielle, that was one of your ideas for the board and I was pretty happy to get this one because I love anthology films. I will say that looking at Arie's films, I think she wins the marathon. Like if I had to pick one marathon to go to, I'm partying with Arielle. So I love all four of her movies. Bro you have even heard the the the the the pitch, the the the the the the the the ride. Dang.

9:33 Look, I. Party. I was in judgment till the end of the episode. Let's be clear. Fair enough. OK. I'll just take the win and retire early, I guess. I just logs out now, just like all right, quick, I'm out. Well, we'll see. We can each decide whose marathon we most want to go to besides our own at the end of the episode. How's that? I don't want to go to mine. I see myself all the time. I need to get away from myself. OK, And then my theme is meta horror. Now I got to admit when we were making our wheel thing, I totally misunderstood what we were going for with that. I thought I didn't realize it was the overarching theme. I thought it was like we were going to spend like 5 times and come up with these are the you need to pick a movie from this category, this category, this category.

10:22 That's so that's why I was throwing out all these ideas was because that's what I thought we were doing. So the broad category is for me is meta horror. And so that that that leaves a surprising amount of possibilities. And I tried to steer away from the obvious on this this group as best. I think that's a great idea for next Halloween, though. I love that. I didn't even think of like having a spin five times, like four or five times. That's all good. I'm I'm always. Room to evolve. Yeah, I mean, hey, that's exactly. Maybe we can just do things in different ways, you know, like you get this pic and then hey, here's your overall theme as well or something.

Or I can kick it off to someone else if. Yeah, I'm ready. All right, so let's set the table for us. What are we getting into if we come to your marathon? All righty, so kicking things off at the 6:00 PM slot, I wanted to pick something something fun, but to also kind of set the mood to kind of give you an idea of what to to experience the rest of the marathon. And this is infested directed by Sebastian Vanechek. This is my pick from France.

11:57 This came out in 2023-2024 depending on what country you live in. But this is a film takes place in a apartment residence and there are many teenagers throughout this building and one of them that brings home this exotic spider that multiplies super fast, exponentially in grows in size very big as well and is also very smart and can mobilize and things. So it is teens in this apartment complex versus a horde of spiders. So yes, not for the faint of hearts if the creepy crawlies get to you, but this is 1. It has some good scares to it, but it's a it's a fun, this is a feel good type of movie by the end of it. So kicking things off at 6:00 PM with Infested. I haven't seen it.

12:49 That sounds great though. I haven't either. I kind of, I kind of did. I think it's on. Shutter. Heard really good things about it but I haven't seen it. Something of an Iraq. Vibes have attacked the block. Like if if you like attacked the block, it's got vibes like that. That's cool. Not on my own. Fair enough. Fair enough. Yeah, well, anything attack the block adjacent sounds cool to me. So. All right, So Steven, what are you doing? What's your what are you starting with? Well. I mean, it's a six, it's a six PM slot. There's probably still some kids up. So we want to pick, I wanted to pick something a little, you know, something for everybody, something everyone can kind of get into and, and feel the spirit and, and what brings people together better than than Christmas.

13:34 And of course, it's a list that I put together so you know exactly where I'm going. Because I am nothing if not predictable. 1984 is Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante. Because I have to be true to the nightmare of my choosing. Speaking of critters that multiply quickly and can mobilize, I'm going with the gremlins. Well. It's a great one for kids to tell them that Santa's not real. So yeah, put that on for 6:00 PM. Yes, yes, it's one of the best gateway horror we talked about. Oh, it's so good, you and I, I think that was a two-part me as well, like we did. Yeah, Brian was there. Brian. Well, I remember Gremlins with Steven because I think it was one of the first episodes that Brian Steven was ever on.

14:17 It was one of the only ones for sure. Yeah, it's one of the best gateway horrors of all time. It's so much fun and familiar, so when people are kind of walking in, you can have like half an eye on it but still mingle, right? Yeah, absolutely. Excellent gateway into your into your marathon. All right, Arielle, what do you got? Yes. So as we discussed in Doing movies set on Halloween and even smaller theme of haunts gone wrong, my 6:00 PM slot is The House is October, built from 2014. And this is a very Arielle movie, if you haven't seen it, directed by Bobby Rowe.

14:57 And it's a movie about it's a found footage style, mockumentary style where there's a group of friends who are trying to find the most underground haunts and like extreme haunts that they can. And so a lot of the movie feels really safe where they're going into these curated haunted haunted houses and having a fun time and asking around and trying to find scarier ones. And then things go off the rails pretty quickly when they start to go off the rails and it ends in a really different place than it started. So I wanted this for the 6:00 PM slot to kind of ease you in with a sense of safety and then mess, mess it up right at the end. I always think this movie is from like 2009 or 2010 because it's kind of mean it's a 2014 joint somehow.

15:46 Can I interject for like 1 SEC? It's your. Show. I well, I know I adore this movie. This actually the second year I went out to host Telluride horror show. They brought this to us and the whole crew came out in like many like not many caravans with like their family. Oh, cool. I'll have to upload the picture that we have like everybody wearing like the mask, like a paper copy of the mask in the crowd at the Sheridan Theater. It was one of the most fun Q and as I've ever done with like the director and some of the cast and crew.

16:27 And then one person in the balcony asked, like, how long can you bury someone until, like, they would die? And I'm like, you're not allowed to come drinking with us after this tonight, Yeah. No, you, no more questions from you. This movie rules like it is so much fun and like what an awesome pick. Thanks I haven't watched these ones cuz y'all already know how I feel about the hell house movies. Yeah, so I'm like, oh, I got to do another one of these series of these haunted styled. You don't. Have. To I don't, but at the same time I'm like, what if they're better? I don't know, I might have. So I'm going to check them out. I'm going to check them out at some. Point. So I think what makes this one different is they actually go to some real haunted attractions and interview some of the people that work them.

17:15 There's a sequel to it, and if you watch the sequel, it honestly feels like an audition for them to get like a Discovery Channel show about this stuff. It's not nearly as good as the first movie, but the first one is being like very creepy. Not just because of the story, but some of the people they interview. You're like, I would cross the street if I came across you in real life. It's got that, The Blair Witch Project, when they're interviewing some actors and some real people in the town and it gives you a sense of reality. It's it's got that going. For it. If all the folks from Blair Witch are on meth. Well, yeah, I mean, yes.

17:56 Sorry. Mike, you're not really selling me, but Ari, you got me hooked at least a little bit, so. It's a mean move. It's pretty mean. It's pretty fun. So this is one of those things where I just checked and I have logged it on letterboxed but I don't remember anything about it so. I love those I have. Those which which either means I'm getting old or I it didn't make much of an impression on me, which, you know, I don't know. But hey, I'll get to watch it again like it's the first time. Yeah. Why not both, Brian? Why not both? Why not? Goodness. Yes, Yes, indeed. Yes, indeed. OK. All right, Mike, what do you got in your 6:00 PM slot? So my first anthology and I have like a like similar to Vaughn, like you have Pete and and Steven, people are filtering in, everyone's greeting one another. So I kind of want to do something that people would be familiar with.

18:47 So that way like you can kind of half watch it but also enjoy company. And it is like a little bit earlier in the night. So I find like although this is an R rated movie, it's still fairly kid friendly. Like it's still, you know, the violence is more comical than anything else. And it's also my favorite anthology film of all time. Teen 82's Creepshow directed by George Romero So if I had the sound board here, which let's see if this works. Can't find it, I proclaim this the summer of George. Now it's the fall and written by Steve. I love this because it's not a Halloween movie, but it has that kind of trick or treat feel to it where it tends to be a little bit more playful.

19:36 You're getting some classic monsters like in terms of like Stephen King as Geordie Varrell, like a kind of a swamp monster. You have like the beast, which is kind of werewolfish is you have zombies and the movies are really fun. How Holbrook just, you know, yelling at Adrian Barbeau. Just tell him to call you Billy. Like that will never not crack me up. Where's my cake is just amazing. Everything about this film. You have Tom Atkins, Tom Atkins, like slapping a young Joe Hill across the face and like really giving it to him. I mean, what's there not who doesn't want to see Joe Hill get slapped? You know, I mean, goodness. So. But I think this is like. 10 year olds.

20:16 Leslie Nielsen in a non comic role. Like, he's like, really dastardly in this. It's just comfortable and familiar and you can watch it with half an eye on the screen while also getting some, like, dips and shit and, you know, reenacting the Joe Hill slap with your friend's kids, you know, just having a good old time. So yeah, creep kids. Are four really? Creep Show 1982. Catch the Fever. I'm. Just laughing that you said dips and chip, as in you were going to have one chip with just like seven corners of dip on it. Sounds. Amazing. Oh no, you got to make that chip last.

Couch, you know, or are you doing something different? Are you renting out of space? Are you? I am. A theater. Mine in a theater. I would love to rent out a theater for mine too. Yeah. That's the way I thought it, yeah. Yeah, I imagined like a little indie theater and I come out and introduce each movie with someone or something.

Like all your choices are perfect for a drive in. So I think so you have that nailed. I imagine this in the confined to my living room with friends coming over and friends bringing their kids over with like every like maybe a potluck, everybody brings some snacks, maybe fire up the grill. Yeah, one chip per person. Everybody gets one chip. Everybody gets one. So I 'cause I just love the idea of like gathering around this season, the decorations are outside, it's fall in the air and I'd rather spend it on the sofa with like really close friends, like doing, watching these.

23:10 So that was me. Yeah, I've my thought is for mine it's tough because it's sort of like I'd love to have the first one in the in a drive in and then the rest of them in in side about. Everybody home. It's like in a regular theater, but I really do like the idea of having a theater showing these on, you know, film if possible, inviting the community, having it be like a big to do. We used to have a theater downtown in this in my in my little city of mine, and it was sort of like some of my best memories are just like our whole community went and saw back to the future or three men and a baby all together.

23:53 It felt like it was like it was crazy. So I just having that sort of feeling with with this marathon I think would be awesome. But so that's my how I how I imagine it in my mind, I guess. So my first movie is there's sort of this misconception, I think that meta horror is a new thing. Like it came around with Scream and that was when it started. But Oh no, my friends. We're taking a look all the way back to 1968 with Peter Bogdanovich's debut feature film Targets, starring Boris Karloff as Essentially Boris Karloff. So he's watching.

24:33 Such a Brian pick, honestly. He's literally watching a movie called The Terror that is a mess of a movie. And he's at the screening ends and he's the look at his face is like, this is the worst thing I've ever seen in my life, which was essentially the joke that that Roger that he gave to Roger Corman. And this is how we're going to start this movie. And so Roger Corman said, OK, I have this movie, The Terror. We're not going to use all the footage. And you need to use like what we're going to have you do is use a bunch of footage from this movie. You have Boris Karloff for two days. So just do more stuff with Boris Karloff and then you can do whatever you want with it.

25:17 And he and he just couldn't. Him and Polly Platt, Peter Bogdanovich, Polly Platt working on this movie, trying to get it figured out. And what they ended up doing was creating a meta movie before that was really even a thing. And so there are two stories that are sort of colliding toward each other throughout the film. And one hand, you have Boris Karloff as this aging, about to retire actor Byron Orlok, who's going to leave horror behind because real horror is taking over. Like, you know, he he's looking at the newspaper and just horrified. This is what real horror is. No one's afraid of, you know, the old, you know, gothic monsters anymore. And at the same time, you have this story unfolding of this young man who is basically going crazy and has decided he's going to take his rifle and shoot at the freeway and all kinds of things.

26:14 And it climaxes with these two stories colliding in a really interesting way. It's one of the most. It's one of my favorite Boris Karloff performances ever. It's remarkable. Peter Bogdanovich is great in it, actually. And then Tim O'kelly as the gunman, Bobby. And there's just so much this movie has to say as such a fascinating film. And yeah, I adore this movie. And I think it's on Criteria now, so probably more people are seeing it. But this is like just one of the great cult movies to kick off of this marathon. I'm going to check that one out this month. Oh, Brian wins the 6:00 PM slot because targets fucking rules so hard.

26:54 And one of the reasons I was thinking of this one also is because it's kind of the long day's journey into night. It takes place in the day and then it ends at night. So you're kind of going into the darkness by the time you're at the end of the movie. So yeah, yeah. Thanks for my. Criterion right now. This is a guy. This is like a. Put this in on my Criterion channel. Watch this. Somebody recommended it to Garrett and then. And then he texted me like as soon as he finished. And he goes, dude, you gotta watch Targets. And then I watch Targets. And then I was like, we gotta do it on the podcast now. And then we watch it again. It was like, like, this movie is so damn good. Yeah, you guys are in for a treat. I can't.

27:37 Wait, this is a great pick. And that scene at the drive in at the end of the movie is such a nail biter. It's so good. It's just a really tense, amazing scene. And yeah, I watched this for the first time over the summer and it's a great way to start. It's a great way to start. Well, thank you. All right, I, I invite you all to come to my marathon. OK, so heading back around the world, Devon, what's your next? What's your 8:00 PM slot? All righty, so in my mind, 8:00 PM. This is like kind of the prime time slot. Everybody settled in after the first movie. People are still fresh, the energy is still good. So I wanted to do my 2 non-english language films first before people start getting too tired and whatnot to read subtitles.

28:26 So but this is the prime time. This is we're going big. This is Godzilla -1 directed by Takashi Yamazaki out of Japan 2023. This movie's everything. If you guys didn't listen to our Best of 2023 episode, I mean, I'm wanting to. I'm hitting people with the feels. We're going epic. The scale of it all. And I looked at my list and I realized all my stuff was from the 21st century. I didn't pick any older stuff. So to somewhat remedy that, I'm also doing Godzilla -1 the black and white version -1 minus color. Yeah.

29:08 Because it very much because this film is such a love letter to Godzilla. Though in the franchise, the icon, the entity itself, you know, it's such a send up of that. So I feel like the black and white really captures that the just enduring legacy of this franchise. But man, this movie, I mean, it just has it all. I mean, it's got the action, it's got terror, it's got heart, it's got joy. Whenever they they, whenever they sink Godzilla, I want everybody honking the horns in the drive through, flashing your headlights. Like, I mean, I mean, it's like, oh man, this movie is just something else. So this is definitely sitting here in the prime time slot.

29:52 The Godzilla -1 the black and white version. No notes. Yeah, Hell yeah. All right. Too perfect. It's too perfect. It's easy, yeah. No, Devon has said it. All I think you're right. I think you're right. We're all fans of of that movie here and we did a Patreon episode on that one too, which was a lot of fun to do back when that came out do. You remember that, Patrons? Yeah. But for this one, I'm putting what is arguably my most prestigious film on the list. Of the two films by this filmmaker I have seen, this one is far and away my favorite because I am a noted disliker of his first film. This is Ari Astor's 2019 film Midsumar for the Swedish holiday of Midsummer. My partner is Swedish and so I I I wanted to put something on here to honor her heritage but also she can confirm that every single thing that happens in that movie is 100% accurate and does occur every Midsummer so. Steven, does your partner do the cooking at home? No, I do.

32:04 No what we are here for a night we promised the folks a night of shenanigans and a night of shenanigans they shall have. But no, I, I, I really enjoy this movie and again, I wanted to get some non American, non Judeo-christian holidays on the list, at least at least some representation. And Mitsumar is a great way to do that. And it ends on after the, you know, the, the madcap hilarity of gremlins. You need, you know, something to continue that madcap hilarity and kind of build that even further. And I think Mitsumar does that very well climaxing and what is I would say the feel good moment of 2019. So good for her. I have stories about this movie. I want to hear all of them right now, Brian. Did.

32:46 It make your wife cry outside. Hereditary. No. Midsummer May is the one that made my wife cry. Yeah, she she, yeah, yeah, she, she will never watch a horror movie ever again because I suggested we watch Midsum. I remember people walking out during the the the Cliff scene and I was like, oh, I was like, this is this is just a good. One director, Devon Devon's like rubbing his hands together like a sicko outside the window. Yeah. For real, for real. And then I saw the director's cut in IMAX during the summer solstice when they did the re release. Near perfect movie. I'm a quarter Swedish myself and my hot take from Midsummer is Pele.

33:33 I would marry him. He's kind of perfect. I love him. Yeah, I adore this movie. Yeah. Yeah, this is a great movie. I've like referenced it when doing couples therapy in the past, like when we bring in. Like that's why I showed it to my wife. I thought it would help see like. See it? Wasn't about. You might have. It is sort of starts out as this group making a documentary about this guy who's planning to be the next Jason or Freddie or, or you know, Michael Myers and how he does it. And so it just, I don't know, I find this movie incredibly hilarious for one thing.

45:20 And I think this is one of those movies that after Targets, you know, which has a great blazing ending. You go into this one, there's a lot of humor, There's a lot of sort of weird twisty stuff. There's some, if you've never seen it, there's some nice twists. It actually switches from being a documentary into being sort of like a a motion picture, a feature film towards the end. And I don't know, I've always liked this movie. I've always found it to be a just a ton of fun and it's got great cameos. There's a there's a cameo moment from Kane Hotter, you've got Zelda Rubenstein, you've got Robert England. And it's sort of, I think in some way it's really smart in the way it approaches, especially so far after Scream had been out.

46:11 Scream had been out for 10 years and it still manages to dissect the slasher in a in a way that's interesting and really entertaining. I also wish this movie would get a sequel. I mean, especially like right now and like fold in like social media, you know, into it. Like this is like kind of the peak time to do like a legacy sequel to it. If anybody hasn't seen it, this isn't a spoiler, but like just to give you an idea of like, you know, the way that they operate within the lore and everything. Like in this movie, The other like killers like have existed or whatever. Leslie Vernon has a mentor, yes, who is like a retired serial killer and his and it is inferred that his wife was like a final girl that he is now married to. And just that whole idea of like just that layer of like adding that in to be like, you know, to put slashers within the real world, I think is very fun and fascinating. This movie's a hoot.

Great pick, another great pick, another fun meta pick. And I think it's a nice kind of like the cerebralism of like targets, like how intelligent that movie is about that.

A tsunami hits and traps everyone in the grocery store. And not only are they trapped in the grocery store and there's tensions of interpersonal dramas arising, there's also sharks swimming around.

Is the acting all that good? No, not really. But it has people that you know, it has people's faces that Xavier Samuel from the loved ones, he's in this the guy from a nip tuck, Julian something. The one that just passed away, Julian. Rest in peace, he's in it as well. This movie, it is not the best thing in the world, but what it is is very fun.

But I I had a lot of fun with Hard Eyes and yeah, I think it'll probably end up making my best of list at the end of the year because yeah, it's a lot of fun. And so I wanted to put in a a really sort of a little bit, not extreme, but like where the violence is elevated, the everything is just like stepped up a little bit more. It's a little bit crazier. So I went with Haunt from 2019. This is a movie that had to grow on me over time. The first time I watched it, I was like, I don't know about this, but every time I watch it, I like it more and more.

And they are trying to figure out, are they seeing real kills and real violence? Are they really trapped? Can they get out anytime? I think that's kind of a theme of of all the movies in my in my marathon. So this one's got some crazy violence in it.

So this is what we're doing at 10:00 PM to keep everybody awake. Like Hell House LLC, where that movie is very scary, but the haunt is a huge let down. Yeah, the haunt in haunt, the actual attraction is pretty terrifying. Like it's a really good haunted attraction. This is also a movie that grew on me. I didn't like it on 1st watch, Ari. It might have even have been you that have said give it another watch. And on like second watch, I'm like, this is actually pretty great.

So the gentleman who had like the most professional looking home haunt for a few years, he did GoPro and he opened up a hunt at like it was actually at a mall of all places. And my friends and I went through it one year and it was incredible. It it was like one of those things, or if like these types of things kind of scare you too much, it would be a perfect one to go through because it was more like walking through, like really gorgeous pieces of haunted art.

I get my friends hyped up, we get our tickets, we get there, we go to stand in line. I turn into a big baby. I start trying to get everybody to bail. But going through these, especially giant outdoor ones that take a long time to go through, like, give me that all day long.

I I made a movie a short film once with an actor who did or guy who owned a haunt in Muncie, IN called the the organ trail and his character was creepy the clown and he was a killer clown who had a weapon he called the giggle stick which was a multi colored bat with little polka dots all over it. And my pick for this is a recent film, one we're going to cover here, VHS Halloween, which I'm not going to say too much about it, but because we're going to cover it in depth with the show, I think it's the best of the VHS series.

1:10:44 It's definitely the best since Part 2. And this to me captures adult Halloween in a really fun way. Like there's not really a ton of like little kid action in this at all. And it kind of captures like at some point when you're a teenager, you kind of grow out of Halloween a little bit and then in your 20s it comes back around and it becomes the best holiday. And most of the segments here really capture that. There's a great haunted house like Coochie Coochie Coochie COO. I think there's like a part in there where there's a giant baby man where I had to like pause the movie because I was laughing so hard at the visual of it.

There's a great home haunt segment in this one, and the teenage kid in that is absolutely brilliant. He gives one of my best performances. Minor spoiler. Like special effects girl Rick Baker plays a character in that segment, Rick, who basically goes through his neighbor's home hunt and just like eviscerates this dude verbally at how shitty everything is and the fact that it's Rick Baker again. Special effects legend who created the best effect of all time in American Werewolf in London. That transformation scene, It's just like, I love everything about this movie.

1:12:15 And it's just the perfect amount of chaos for 10:00 PM. And I think that this is like, you get a like, the kids are gone to bed and you can be a little bit crazy. I saw this at Fantastic Fest and it was such a good one to see. With Josh, yeah. I really had a lot of fun with it. I think it's a great one to watch with friends. It captures the Halloween spirit. It Yeah, great pick. I haven't watched it yet, I haven't kept up on the VHS series to be honest, but I will get. There's like 1 every 15 minutes so I can't really blame you. I know, though, technically speaking, it's like, Oh no, actually, Brad's not at Bloody Disgusting anymore.

AIP just totally abandoned horror after, you know, after that anyway. No, of course not that. But so he develops this makeup where he essentially is able to control these people. It's like teenagers are so great to work with. They're so malleable.

And it's so it starts out in black and white. And so this is the third installment in that. And but it's the meta version. It's the it's the new nightmare version of and it's it's goes to color at the end for no apparent reason. Like it. I mean, everybody who likes Evangelion says that, right? But like, it lives in my soul. And Guillermo del Toro was so inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion, the way the angels and the robots, the mechs in that franchise use movement and and you can feel the weight of the fights. He was inspired to put that into his robots and his kaijus. And so there are movements in Pacific Rim that looked like exact movements from Evangelion.

And you, you'll notice I'm going a long way building this up because the film is, is Jordan, Jordan Downey's 2008 classic Thanks Killing, in which a a homicidal Turkey, an undead homicidal Turkey rises from the grave after 510 years to murder a group of college students going home for Thanksgiving break.

And this movie is another group of teenagers go to, but this is more like an amusement park, like maybe a Six Flags Fright Night type or Fright Fest type of thing because there's like different areas they can go to. And our main girl, our final girl, gets the sense that one of the haunt actors is following them throughout. And you've got the classic slasher setup of her friends being like you're imagining things, things you need to relax.

1:35:05 This is a really easy movie to watch and it is a really, really good version of what it is like. It is a slasher at a haunted amusement park. It's not asking a lot of you, but it's a really well done movie of that. And the acting is good and the killer is scary. So, you know, I thought it'd be good for Midnight because it's enjoyable enough to, like, keep you entertained, like keep you engaged. But it's not asking too much of you. It's just a slasher that you can dig your teeth into. It's got some great kills. And it has one of the best endings. So all the endings of the movies I picked kind of go somewhere where maybe you're like, oh, didn't think that was going to happen. And so that continues with Hellfest. Yeah, this is a great slasher that just had the misfortune of coming out at the same time as 2018's Halloween, which I believe went on to be like the highest grossing slasher movie of all time and kind of just sucked all the oxygen out of every other, like, genre film that was out. But this is another amusement park junkie and honk junkie. This melds the world's really well. They're actually going to be doing that on Saturday with my kiddo and my sister and her kids. And we're going to be doing this exact thing, like a amazing part that converts into a lot of haunted attractions around Halloween.

1:40:08 Bananas VHS Halloween is This is a 2017 British anthology film called Ghost Stories. It's based off a play that from Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, they adapted their stage production for the screen and it is a little bit different in that it follows like 1 character who's a paranormal investigator and he investigates 3 separate stories including one starring Martin Freeman from The Hobbit movies. And like always, a welcome presence on screen is a Martin Freeman. It's very creepy, very atmospheric, but it is definitely like a much more languid pace overall. And the end of this film, like when you get the revelation of what's actually going on, is one of the sadder endings to a film. I won't spoil it here.

1:41:07 It's something that's on shutter. You can also buy it for five bucks on iTunes right now and I would say it's well worth the blind buy for. There are some great atmospheric scares in it. It's really well acted, it's really well shot and the ending is a bit divisive, but I personally thought it worked really well. It's a creepy for reasons creepy for reasons you wouldn't expect.
